The mountain, its strength its power, its greatness inspire the men who love it, and live with it. The mountain once sealed its future in the hearts of a handful of pioneers. Jean Vuarnet and his friends looked at the mountain as it has always been. Unique, immense, indivisible. Pure evidence. This truth gave wings to these men who saw neither borders, nor chapels, nor resorts. Just an infinity of snow and freedom. This extreme link of nature, strength, pleasure and land.

The combination of their talents changed the face of the mountains. The peaks no longer being impassable barriers, but bridges, bridges between countries, men and valleys. The mountain seen above the clouds. Where the rock, the ice and the sun are the reason for the men and their too low vision. The breath of the original mountain has opened wide les portes du soleil. That was 50 years ago. This ski area became a world first. One area inspired all the other valleys, which in turn wove their ties, ultimately returning the mountain to its original signature: intensity and immensity.

The spirit of “the High Road of Families” – the name of the project that gave birth to the Portes du Soleil in 1964 – still inhabits these peaks. When a bell tinkles in La Chapelle d’Abondance, it resonates with the clatter of a ski lift in Morgins, which responds to the hoof of a horse in Avoriaz. This beautiful harmony spreads until it rings in March under the seal of the Rock The Pistes Festival.
