Pointe de Nantaux, the emblematic summit of the Chablais region, rises to 2170 metres and offers a hike that is as demanding as it is spectacular. Pointe de Nantaux, the emblematic summit of the Chablais region, rises to 2170 metres and offers a hike that is as demanding as it is spectacular. Starting from the hamlet of Le Pas, near Montriond, the route is a direct and sustained ascent through forest, pastures and an open summit ridge. Although this is not a technical route, the steepness of the slope, the length of the route and the infrequency of signposting make it a hike for experienced walkers with a good sense of direction.
The trail climbs along a stream before reaching the Les Avenières hut. As soon as you leave the forest, the atmosphere becomes mountainous: the grassy ridge rises, the crest takes shape, and the panoramic views widen with every step. The final section alternates between discreet paths and steep sections on the ridge, offering spectacular views of the surrounding peaks: Roc d'Enfer, Hauts-Forts, Dents du Midi, Mont Blanc on a clear day...
Allow around 5-6 hours for the round trip, with a vertical drop of almost 1,200 metres. A very steep and direct "KMV" (Kilomètre Vertical) variant exists for the more athletic, but should be avoided on the descent. In wet weather, mud can make some passages slippery, especially in grassy areas. Summer remains the best season to undertake this hike, although it can be done as soon as the snow melts.
